چکیده

Pulmonary arterial hypertension in man at altitude was first demonstrated by Rotta, Canepa. Hurtado. Velasquez & Chavez (1956). One year before Vega (1955) had published the first comprehensive clinical account of high altitude pulmonary oedema. Since the mid-sixties. interest in both pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary oedema at altitude has continued to generate a great deal of clinical and experimental research.

The preterminal arterioles in the pulmonary circulation of high-altitude natives.

NOTABLE advances in knowledge of respiratory physiology and pulmonary hemodynamics have resulted from the application of newer technics. Special attention has been given to the alterations produced by hypoxia in the pulmonary circulatory system. In 1940 Von Euler and Liljestrand showed that the pulmonary arterial pressure in cats increased when they were maintained in low-pressure chambers.1 In...

Effects of High-Altitude Exposure on the Pulmonary Circulation Efectos de la exposición a grandes alturas en la circulación pulmonar

More than 140 million people dwell at altitudes of over 2500 m. The Andes region is home to the greatest population density at an altitude of more than 3500 m. Equally, the number of persons living at sea level (SL) is growing, and they travel to medium, high, or extreme altitudes for occupational or scientific reasons, or to enjoy tourism or recreational activities, as is the case of hikers, m...

The physiology of high altitude: an introduction to the cardio-respiratory changes occuring on ascent to altitude

Both the high altitude physiologist and the intensivist are challenged by the human organism in a hypoxic environment. The variation in barometric pressure which occurs with latitude influences enormously the inspired oxygen concentration at extreme altitudes and can significantly effect performance. The cardiorespiratory changes which take place at high altitude, and in particular the putative...

High altitude-induced pulmonary hypertension in normal cattle.

• Elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure is known to occur during hypoxia in a number of mammalian species. The mechanisms involved in the production of this hypertension are, however, not clearly understood. Most previous investigations have been concerned with the effect of short periods of severe hypoxia upon the pulmonary circulation. The effects of mild, prolonged hypoxia are less we...
